SOAMES COMMENDS ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT SELECT COMMITTEE ON ITS REPORT ON SUSTAINABLE HOUSING

The Environmental Audit Committee has published a report on the Government's housing plans. It's previous report, published in January last year under the Chairmanship of Peter Ainsworth, was highly critical of the way that crucial environmental issues were being sidelined in the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's rush to build more houses.

Commenting on today's follow-up report, Peter Ainsworth, the Shadow Environment Secretary said; "It is depressing to note that Mr Prescott has failed to take on board any of the criticisms that the Committee levelled at his Department last year. Everybody knows that we need to build more houses; but it would be extremely irresponsible to continue with a mass housebuilding programme without first properly considering the environmental implications. There is a serious danger that Mr Prescott is laying the foundations of a social and environmental calamity."
