Nicholas Soames: To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs what assessment she has made of the contribution of game management to the management of upland areas. [9112]
James Paice MP, Minister of State, DEFRA: The Government recognise the importance of the contribution which game management makes to the creation and management of the relevant habitat types. 96% of those Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) which are grouse moor are now in favourable or recovering condition, increasing from 51% in 2006. This is a reflection of moorland managers' awareness of the importance and sensitivity of upland biodiversity.
