In the week that climate change hit the top of the political agenda Nicholas Soames was delighted to welcome Zac Goldsmith, the internationally acclaimed environmentalist and editor of the Ecologist, to address members of his constituency.
Nicholas Soames said; “Zac gave the most inspiring and thought provoking speech on climate change, which is undoubtedly the most serious challenge facing us all. It was particularly fascinating given the publication of the Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change this week. Zac led a very frank discussion on the challenge ahead and the tough decisions to be made by us all; the Government, business and individuals.”
Mr Soames said; “For my own part I have calculated the full extent of my carbon footprint in my constituency and to compensate I am planting this year 18 trees which I have donated to the Town Councils of Burgess Hill, East Grinstead and Haywards Heath. I am planting the first six trees next week.”
Zac Goldsmith is the Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party’s Quality of Life Policy Group which David Cameron established to investigate every aspect of the quality of life agenda: transport and housing; urban planning and the quality of public space; pollution, waste, biodiversity and the countryside; energy and climate change.
The Conservative Party has been pressing the Government to introduce a Climate Change Bill in the Queen’s Speech.
